10 Ways to Organize the Space Under Your Kitchen Sink

If you are like me, the space under your kitchen sink can get out of control faster than you realize. One minute you have a few cleaning bottles and a sponge, and the next thing you know, it’s a chaotic jumble of sprays, rags, and random bottles that don’t even fit together.

Organizing it doesn’t have to feel like a chore. Once you figure out how to make the most of that little space, suddenly it’s not just a storage spot; it becomes a smart little hub for all your cleaning needs. I want to show you ways to do that so you can grab what you need without tearing the whole thing apart.

1. Start with a clean slate

If you are like me, the first step is always emptying everything out completely. I usually take everything out of the cabinet, even the stuff I think I might still use, and put it on the counter or the floor. Once everything is out, I take a good look at the cabinet and wipe it down thoroughly. I like to use a mild cleaner and then sometimes add a shelf liner at the bottom so that if anything leaks or spills later, it doesn’t ruin the wood or make a big mess. It’s amazing how much less intimidating organizing feels when you’re not trying to work around a pile of random bottles and rags.

2. Declutter and pare down

The next step I always do is declutter everything I’ve pulled out. I go through each item one by one and ask myself if I really use it or if it’s just taking up space. Anything expired or no longer useful goes straight into the trash. Sometimes I find duplicates of cleaning products I didn’t even realize I had, and getting rid of extras frees up a surprising amount of space. When I keep only what I actually need, the cabinet feels so much bigger and easier to work with. It’s such a small step, but it makes a huge difference in keeping the space neat over time.

3. Install a tension rod

One of my favorite little tricks is installing a tension rod across the cabinet. It’s such a simple thing, but it really changes how I use the space. I hang spray bottles by their handles on the rod, which keeps them off the bottom of the cabinet and makes them easy to grab without moving everything else around. It also opens up more floor space under the sink for other items, like caddies or bins, so nothing gets lost at the back, where it can get buried and forgotten.

4. Use pull‑out drawers or shelves

If your cabinet is deep, you know the struggle of reaching for something at the back without knocking over everything in front. I usually separate items into different drawers or trays so each category of supplies has its own space. It keeps things visible, easy to reach, and prevents the constant digging that makes the cabinet feel messy.

5. Add shelving units or tiered organizers

Layering the space is another trick I love. I use small shelves or tiered organizers to create multiple levels inside the cabinet. It’s amazing how much space you can reclaim this way. I can put clothes on one tier, sprays on another, and small bottles or miscellaneous items on the top. This keeps everything visible and prevents items from piling on top of each other in a messy jumble. I like that it forces me to be thoughtful about where everything goes instead of just stacking everything on the floor of the cabinet.

6. Use clear bins and containers

Clear bins are my secret weapon. I can see exactly what’s inside without digging through piles of bottles and sponges. I usually group similar items, sponges in one bin, sprays in another, and sometimes small tools in their own little container. It keeps the cabinet organized and makes it easy to put things back in their place. Another bonus is that if something spills, it’s contained in the bin, which makes cleanup so much easier.

7. Mount storage on the cabinet doors

The inside of the cabinet doors is an often-overlooked space that can be super useful. I put small racks or containers there for gloves, sponges, and trash bags. This keeps these smaller items easily accessible without cluttering up the main shelves or floor of the cabinet. It also helps me keep everything in its own spot, which is key because if everything is just shoved together, it always ends up messy again.

8. Incorporate a Lazy Susan

I love using a Lazy Susan under the sink. It’s such a simple addition, but it makes reaching items in the back so much easier. Everything spins around, so I can get to what I need without moving a bunch of bottles and risking a spill. I usually put my most-used sprays and cleaning products on the turntable so I can grab them in a flash. It’s small, inexpensive, and makes a big difference in how functional the space feels.

9. Create a portable cleaning caddy

Having a small caddy with a handle is one of the most practical ideas for me. I put my daily-use cleaning products in it so I can carry them around the house when I clean. When I’m done, I just slide the caddy back under the sink in its spot. It keeps everything organized, prevents things from getting lost, and makes moving supplies much easier.

10. Take advantage of hooks and vertical space

Hooks are a tiny addition that makes a big difference. I hang dishcloths, gloves, or small brushes inside the cabinet so they don’t take up space on the floor. Using vertical space this way keeps everything off the bottom and makes the cabinet easier to use. It also keeps items visible and prevents clutter from building up over time.

Wrapping up

Organizing the space under your kitchen sink might seem small, but it makes a surprisingly big difference in your daily life. Once everything has its place, it’s easier to find what you need, and the space looks cleaner. Taking the time to do it right saves a lot of frustration later and makes all the small cleaning tasks feel simpler and more manageable.
